Performing preventative maintenance HP LaserJet 4200/4300 printers
It is important to replace certain parts when the “PERFORM PRINTER MAINTENANCE” message appears on the printer control panel display. To help ensure that your printer maintains optimum performance, the printer prompts with this message every 200,000 pages. The message can be temporarily cleared for approximately 10,000 pages, and then the message appears again.
To temporarily clear the message, open the Configure Device menu at the printer control panel, scroll to the Resets menu, and then scroll to CLEAR MAINTENANCE MESSAGE.
To perform printer maintenance, install a printer maintenance kit (see “Installing the printer maintenance kit” below).
Installing the HP LaserJet 4200/4300 printer maintenance kit
Fuser Removal
1. Open rear tray and remove by inserting finger in grip on left hinge and pushing in.
2. Grip blue tabs and slide fuser out rear of printer.
3. Insert new fuser, pushing until clicks are heard.
Transfer Roller Replacement
1. Open top of printer and remove toner cartridge.
2. Locate left side of transfer roller with blue gear.
3. Using small screwdriver, pry up under left side of roller and lift out from right side.
4. Reinstall new roller by reversing instructions. Avoid touching the transfer roller with your fingers, as this can cause contamination and adversely affect print quality.
5. Remove paper protector.
Feed/Separation Rollers Replacement
1. Remove cassette.
2. Open access door in tray and remove separation roller by pinching blue lock tab.
3. Reinstall new separation roller.
4. Repeat for each cassette.
5. Remove feed roller from inside cassette area by pinching blue lock tab on roller.
6. Reinstall new feed roller.
7. Repeat for each cassette.
Tray 1 Pickup Roller Replacement
1. Open tray 1.
2. Remove dust cover above roller.
3. Remove roller by pressing lock tabs on both sides of
roller. The picture to the left shows lock tab on right side.
4. Reinstall new roller and snap into place.
5. Reinstall dust cover.
Tray 1 Separation Pad Replacement
1. Once tray 1 pickup roller is removed, use flat screwdriver to pry up removable separation pad.
2. Install new separation pad.
Resetting Maintenance Counter (HP Laserjet 4200/4300 Printers)
1. Turn printer off.
2. Hold down the “Select” button and turn the printer on.
Continue holding “Select” down until all three control panel lights remain on.
3. Press the “Up arrow” button and scroll to “New Maintenance Kit.”
4. Press “Select” once more to reset.
Resetting Maintenance Counter (HP Laserjet 4250/4350 Printers)
1. Turn printer off.
2. After turning printer on press and hold the “Select” button, when “00MB” appears on the display. Continue holding down the “Select” button until all three control panel lights flash and then remain on.
3. Press the “Up Arrow” button to scroll to “New Maintenance Kit”.
4. Press select one more time to reset.
