Epson Stylus Color 1520 Inkjet Printer

The Epson Stylus D120 Inkjet Printer offers print speeds up to twice as fast as conventional inkjet printers. Twin high capacity black ink cartridges deliver great yields for printing high volume text documents. 5 individual ink cartridges and low power consumption mean a highly efficient printing system. In terms of controls the Epson Stylus D120 Inkjet Printer has three buttons across a glossy black strip atop the front panel and these are for power, ink cartridge swap over and paper feed should you need to clear a jam for example. On the rear, you find the power socket and USB 2.0 port but disappointingly, the printer is not supplied with a USB cable.

The inks employed are Epson’s DURABright Ultra pigment based inks and the two black are there to add the extra ink capacity envisioned as a requirement for the higher use this printer is likely to get in an office situation. The Epson Stylus D120 Inkjet Printer is suitably quiet in use when printing standard documents but once you bump up the speed (more on that in moment) noise increases noticeably and the mechanism drives the paper through at speeds up to 37 pages per minute (ppm).

To compete against laser printers, the Epson Stylus D120 Inkjet Printer needs to have good text quality and at the two “standard” print speeds of 25ppm for black-only printing and 11ppm for colour, look good. In practise however, the speeds are slower; I got a black text print speed of around 10ppm and a mixed colour and black text document print speed of around 3.5ppm, so much slower than the claimed Epson speeds. However, these speeds are comparable to speeds for similar documents on personal laser printers but the Epson Stylus D120 Inkjet Printer offers the advantage of having colour output into the bargain.

Looking at its specs, you might not suspect that the Epson Stylus Pro 3800 is as solid a printer as it is. Resolution maxes out at 2880×1,440dpi, the minimum ink droplet size is 3.5 picoliters (some printers go as small as 1 picoliter), and Epson’s MicroPiezo print head offers only 180 nozzles per color. However, Epson claims that its Active Meniscus Control (AMC) technology, combined with fancy new control algorithms, let them achieve more precise ink placement than any of their competitors.
The Stylus Pro 3800 isn’t the fastest printer out there. A 6×10 print took 2 minutes, 8 seconds with the printer quality set to 1,440dpi (a.k.a. SuperFine) instead of its highest 2,880dpi (a.k.a. SuperPhoto) option. Also, remember that if the printer has to switch between matte- and photo-black inks, it’ll add to your wait. The same 6×10 photo took 5 minutes, 18 seconds on our first try, when the printer had to make the switch. A borderless, 13×19 print that didn’t require switching inks took 10 minutes, 9 seconds.

The Canon Pixma iP8500 Photo Printer is named to fit into
Canon’s current Pixma iP line, but the Canon printer it most resembles is the i9900,
another current Editors’ Choice and the fastest photo printer we’ve seen to
date. As with the i9900, the iP8500 can serve as an all-purpose printer. But
it’s really designed for those who demand high photo quality and print enough
photos, at sizes up to 8.5 by 11 inches, for speed to matter.

At 6.7 by 17.8 by 11.5 inches (HWD), the iP8500 is a little larger than most
ink jets, but not by much. As with the i9900, you’ll find a PictBridge connector
for cameras on the front, a separate cartridge for each ink inside, and a total
of eight ink colors, adding red and green to the typical photo printer mix of
cyan, yellow, magenta, light cyan, light magenta, and black. As with the
i9900—and some Epson printers—the additional colors yield a wider-than-usual
color gamut for photos.
